Overview of the Pepper Market in May 2023
In May 2023, Vietnam’s pepper market experienced notable export growth, with a total of 28,759 tons of pepper exported. This includes 25,850 tons of black pepper and 2,909 tons of white pepper. The export turnover reached 89.6 million USD, with black pepper accounting for 76.8 million USD and white pepper reaching 12.8 million USD. Compared to the previous month, the export volume increased by 9.4%, and the turnover increased by 7.5%. The average export price for black pepper was US$3,540/ton, while white pepper reached US$5,024/ton, showing an increase compared to April 2023. Chinese and US markets showed positive growth, with exports to China stabilizing at 10,255 tons (up 2.6%) and exports to the US reaching 5,409 tons (up 41.7%).
In May 2023, Vietnam imported a total of 2,315 tons of pepper, including 2,206 tons of black pepper and 109 tons of white pepper. The total import turnover was 7.8 million USD, with Brazil, Cambodia, and Indonesia being the main suppliers, accounting for 54.6%, 16.7%, and 16% respectively. The import volume decreased by 2.3% compared to the previous month.

From January to May 2023, Vietnam exported 131,777 tons of pepper, with black pepper accounting for 119,832 tons and white pepper reaching 11,945 tons. The total export turnover reached 408.9 million USD, with black pepper reaching 354.1 million USD and white pepper reaching 54.7 million USD. Although the export volume increased by 30.0% compared to the same period last year, the export turnover decreased by 12.7%. The average export price of black pepper in the first 5 months was 3,443 USD/ton, and white pepper was 4,955 USD/ton. Asia remained a prominent export market, with China being the main destination, accounting for 35% of Vietnam’s pepper export market share and experiencing a substantial increase of 1,668.9% compared to the same period in 2022. Other Asian markets, such as Saudi Arabia, India, and the Philippines, also showed varying trends. The Americas and Europe regions witnessed a decrease in imports, while exports to Africa increased significantly.
