Pepper, one of Vietnam’s essential agricultural products, continues to see significant developments in its import and export sector. Pepper Export in August 2023: Noteworthy Growth

According to data from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Vietnam exported a total of 19,617 metric tons of pepper in August 2023, comprising 17,425 metric tons of black pepper and 2,192 metric tons of white pepper. The export turnover reached $73.4 million, with black pepper contributing $62.4 million and white pepper adding $11.0 million. Compared to the previous month, exports surged significantly by 29.5%, and the export turnover increased by 29.3%. However, the average export prices experienced a slight decline, with black pepper averaging at $3,634 per metric ton and white pepper at $5,185 per metric ton.

An important highlight is that the United States remains the largest export market for Vietnam in August, with 4,376 metric tons of pepper, marking a 31.8% increase from July. Other significant markets include India, China, and the UAE.

Pepper Import in August 2023: Changes in Import Patterns

In August 2023, Vietnam imported a total of 1,731 metric tons of pepper, with black pepper accounting for the majority at 1,585 metric tons and white pepper at 146 metric tons. The total import turnover reached $6.6 million. Compared to the previous month, imports decreased by 21.2%. In this context, there have been notable changes in the supply sources, especially a decrease in imports from Brazil, alongside an increase in imports from Indonesia and Cambodia.

Pepper Export and Import for the First 8 Months of 2023

As of the end of August 2023, Vietnam had exported a total of 187,755 metric tons of pepper, including 168,643 metric tons of black pepper and 19,112 metric tons of white pepper. The total export turnover reached $616.1 million. The volume of exports increased by 15.1% compared to the same period last year; however, the export turnover decreased by 15.0%.

In the export sector, businesses within the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) are experiencing a decrease in imports, while non-VPA businesses are strengthening their export activities. China remains the largest export market for Vietnam’s pepper in the first 8 months of 2023.
